Joel C. Sercel, PhD


A Caltech PhD engineer with almost 30 years of industrial, civil, and defense experience, Joel Sercel is a world renowned innovator, management consultant, team leader, and systems engineer with proven innovations in several fields including social networking systems, space propulsion, space mission design, devices for use in rugged environments, and architectures for unmanned aerial vehicles. Today Joel is the President and Founder of ICS Associates Incorporated. Previously, he was a member of the research staff in Controls and Dynamical Systems at the California Institute of Technology. Working as a consultant, Sercel aided the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in establishing a network of innovation centers across the country. He has led teams and organizations ranging in size from 1 to 125. Sercel has done business, consulted, or lectured in three of the world’s four hemispheres.

Dr. Sercel was the Director of Caltech's Laboratory for Spacecraft and Mission Design and a Member of the Faculty in Aeronautics at Caltech.  Software and processes designed by Dr. Sercel have been used at many world class organizations including JPL, Boeing, Raytheon, Northrup Grumman, and United Technologies. Dr. Sercel has worked with the Advanced Technology Institute, Alliance Space Systems, Boeing, DARPA, ITT Gilfillan, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, NASA, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon Systems, Space Systems Loral, TRW, the United States Air Force, and United Technologies.

Dr. Sercel received his PhD and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and a degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Arizona. He is also a certified consultant for the U.S. Department of Defense and a registered practitioner in the psychological specialty of KAI (the Kirton Adaptive, Innovative inventory) in which he measures people’s cognitive style as it relates to creativity and innovation and consults with them about how to perform best in team situations.
